HAYSOKE 1 GUESTHOUSE |
| One in a small chain in Laos, this is by far the friendlier and better of the two in Vientiane, occupying a very central location close to the Lao Cultural Hall. As with many other places, the rooms with shared bathrooms are the least attractive and the smallest. The best rooms here are the bigger twins with windows looking out onto the street. Furnishings are woven rattan and complement the simple decor. En suite bathrooms are well sized and spotless. No food is offered, but its not far from Vientianes cafes and restaurants. |

KHAMKOUN HOTEL |
| The Khamkhoun, set in an attractive wooden building with a terracotta-tiled roof, is in a very busy location just up from the bus station. Nevertheless, it is probably one of the most charming in this area and the rooms are well sound-proofed from the traffic noise on Lane Xang Ave. All the rooms are of a good size, tastefully decorated and have cable TV, air-con and hot water. Although the Thai visa office has now moved from across the road, this is still a popular and convenient place for those who come here to renew or obtain visas. Though it seems a bit removed from Vientianes attractions, it is only a short walk to Victory Gate, That Luang or the morning market and would be a Francophiles heaven as it is just across from the cultural centre. The downstairs restaurant is open from 07:00 till 22:00 and attracts a regular custom. Breakfast is included. |

From your spacious room at the Long Ngum View Resort enjoy the views of the Fragipanis in the garden and the surrounding countryside |
LAO SAKHONE GUESTHOUSE |
| A friendly and good value guesthouse not too far from the riverfront, Lao Sakonh is a rather rambling place with rooms running off long corridors on the top three floors. The twin rooms are better than the doubles, having more space and better bathrooms. Try to avoid the few rooms on the ground floor behind the reception -- definitely not worth it. The middle floor has apparently been redeveloped but the rooms on this floor appear to be the same as the others, which leaves one to wonder what they looked like before. |

MALAYVAN HOTEL |
| The original building was constructed in the 1960s by a prominent Vientiane politician as a private residence. The family was large, and its many rooms were needed for all the children, grandchildren and extended family. |
MIXAY GUESTHOUSE |
| The Mixay Guesthouse is one of the few places in Vientiane firmly aimed at the budget conscious. The guesthouse now looks rather shabby and rooms are really basic and uninspired but its passable for a night if you want to be close to the river. The shared bathrooms dont seem to get cleaned too often, which is disappointing given that most of the rooms here dont come en suite. The rooms that do have bathrooms are slightly better and actually not bad value for the area. |
NUM NGUM 1 GUESTHOUSE |
|

When visitng Vientiane, Laos capital, enjoy the initmate company of the family run Oulayvanh Guest House. |
PHETPHIM P P GUESTHOUSE |
| The seven rooms above the internet cafe of the same name are actually a lot nicer than the outside of the building suggests. The rooms are basic but some thought has gone into making them slightly more homely and the large twin room at the front is great value, with its own balcony overlooking the Mekong. The shared bathrooms are clean and have excellent showers. This is a good location and probably the best value for somewhere right on the riverfront, though theres no real sense that this is a proper guesthouse. |
PHONEPASEUTH GUESTHOUSE |
| Phonepaseuth boasts a great location on the small road behind the fountain. Pale green rooms are comfortable and pleasant with en suite bathrooms, hot water and cable TV. You can choose to have the air-con off to save a few dollars. Not all the rooms have windows which can make them seem rather dark and gloomy, and bathrooms are on the mildewed side. They do have a restaurant, which is open all day till 22:00, which is a bit of a rarity in this area, but breakfast is not included in the price. With the better Mali Namphu next door, theyre going to have to do something a bit extra to compete. |
RD GUESTHOUSE |
| The owners of this cheerful and bright guesthouse invite guests to relax and dream away and with a setup like this, its not hard to do. Rooms are small but spic and span. En suite bathrooms dont offer much by way of privacy -- a swinging door is all that separates the room -- but are smartly designed and with the toilet and shower on opposite ends, nobody has to sit on a wet seat. Beds are comfortable and twin and double rooms have cable TV. Downstairs, the guesthouse offers a well-appointed library for guests that houses guidebooks pertaining to the area and a variety of novels. RD is a great and central choice just steps from the river. |

SABAIDY GUESTHOUSE |
| Sabaidy is aimed at backpackers on a very tight budget. They have three openly adjoined rooms with six bunk-style beds, and another with four beds. The beds have sheets, but youll need to put a small deposit down for either blankets or towels. Each bed comes with a largish locker in the room, and a safety deposit box is held downstairs for valuables. Sabaidy also has a few individual rooms that are cheap and very basic and the steps up to those on the top floor are somewhat precarious. The shared bathrooms have hot water but are not especially clean. The ground-floor restaurant doesnt always serve food. Staff are quite happy to help you organise visas and onward travel arrangements, and its a great place to meet other travellers. |
SANTISOUK GUESTHOUSE |
| Although located opposite the entrance to the National Stadium, this guesthouse can be confusing to find even with the distinct signage. Look for the marble steps on the left of the adjoining restaurant. The nine rooms all have two beds and air-conditioning. They are spacious and clean but have no windows, which can make them dark and musty. The en-suite bathrooms are excellent with huge baths (suitable for tall people), bidet and 24-hour hot water. Be warned-there is an 11p curfew! |
SAYSOULY GUESTHOUSE |
| Saysouly Guesthouse Located in the centre of Vientiane near internet cafes, temples and travel agents, convenient for budget travelers, Saysouly Guesthouse offers 15 guestrooms with modern decoration. First opened in 1997, an additional new building was completed in 2003. |

SYRI 1 GUESTHOUSE |
| The Syri 1 Guesthouse is the better of the two Syri guesthouses, set in a very quiet street near the national sports stadium. There are two Lao houses with the front building housing the air-con rooms and a lovely old house at the back containing the fan rooms. The rooms may have a slightly worn look but you do get the feeling youre in someones house and the friendly owner certainly makes you welcome. There are a few outside areas to relax and overall this is very good value. KHAEMKHONG GUESTHOUSE |
| On our last visit we found this place deteriorating badly, and the physical appearance of the place is still pretty shabby. The thatched bamboo bungalows are still there, with their sticky doors, cruddy bathrooms, and peeling fake linoleum floors. However, the management are making an effort: theyve built four new concrete units with tile floors and decent, cold-water baths. No furniture other than the beds, but we assume they are working on it. Still theyre overpriced. |
KHAMPHOUY GUESTHOUSE |
| This has excellent bamboo bungalows with concrete floors that would be close to the pick in town if they were on the riverbank. Set on the other side of the main road, there is little to observe from your room aside from the steady stream of ducks and geese that make up most of Champasaks traffic. Very friendly, and the rooms are spotless. |
KOKY GUESTHOUSE |
| This unique place offers three cozy, very pretty little rooms in what basically must have been someones house at one point - one of the rooms gives straight on to the kitchen! MR B SUNSET BUNGALOWS |
| Ideally placed just to the left of Miss Noys, weve watched the long-running Mr B.Sunset go through some pretty substantial renovations, switching from bamboo to wood bungalows. But although they are in a superb sunset position (this isnt called Mr B. Sunset for nothing) the new digs dont have quite the charm of some of the cheaper, old-school outfits further south along the same side of the island. Even though its close to Mrs. Noys, you cant get here from there -- you have to take the sunset road, not the road across the northern tip of the island. |
MRS NOY GUESTHOUSE |
| Just up the trail that runs behind Souksan, Miss Noys is one of the favourite sunset spots on the island with a regular throng of people who pile into their well-placed hammocks - for a beer or a toke an hour before sunset - and then disappear straight after. If you plan on staying for the night, Noy has tidy little thatch and rattan bungalows all with clean shared bathrooms - they are, however, nearly all well off the waters edge. |

PAK SONG GUESTHOUSE |
| The Pak Song Guesthouse is a fine place to stop for the night and the temperature is cool so if you want to do nothing for a day or so, this isnt a bad place to lay around. (One traveller recommends it is an excellent place to do your washing). To find the guesthouse continue straight on past the crossroads after the market and the building at the bottom of the slope, some 3-400m further on is the guesthouse. There are some rooms in an older building with dont seem to be rented out any more -- the rooms in the newer building have tile floors, broadcast TVs, so-so bathrooms, and are perfectly acceptable. Unfortunately they are well-overpriced, but then when it comes to accommodation in Pak Song, its a sellers market. The guesthouse is run by a friendly family who speak a few words of English, and its situated right near a local stream which is a popular spot to take a dip. Food at the associated restaurant is pretty good and cheap and the portions are huge. (Try their kaeng chent -- meat and vegetable soup with rice). Hot tea and water are supplied all day free of charge. |
PHATHAVONE HOTEL |
|
PHONESAVANH HOTEL |
| The Phonesavanh Hotel is a bit of a hole, but the associated guesthouse down the road to the east is one of the top choices in town. It loses in the popularity sweep-stakes to the Sabaidy 2 up the road, probably because the staff are much more shy and awkward around tourists, so the place doesnt have that same guest house vibe. But the rooms themselves, in terms of value for money, are much better. Theres a good range of rooms on offer, and the air-con rooms with cable TV are a great option for affordable comfort. The location is closer to the centre of town than the Sabaidy 2, but on a rough dirt road in a non-descript neighbourhood, it isnt nearly as pleasant.
|
PHOUKHONG GUESTHOUSE |
| This small place, right next to Pons, pales in comparison, and the rooms are a tight squeeze, but we cant complain about the price. They also have a restaurant across the street on the water, with the same menu as everywhere else -- a good place to sit and relax in the evening, but the food here is disappointing and the service incredibly slow. |
PON GUESTHOUSE |
| The rooms here are spotless and large, with warm water showers and frilly bed covers and curtains. It feels more like a small hotel than a guesthouse, but Pon remains an amiable chap with some good information on the area. A small upstairs terrace has reasonable views over the river, while the downstairs restaurant right on the river does the usual local standards and, according to Travelfish users, serves some pretty good Lao Lao cocktails. Very popular both with backpackers and Thai tour groups. |

SAILOMYEN GUESTHOUSE |
| The Sailomyen has cheap, beautifully rustic bungalows with porches right along the river. They all have shared bath and are fan only, but the proximity to the river keeps things quite cool at night. The rooms arent much more than a bed with four walls and a roof over your head, with a hammock on the porch, but theyre great value for the price. There have been rumours of frequent thefts here, though, so keep an eye on your stuff and let us know if you have any bad experiences. Otherwise, a great option. |
SAYTHONG GUESTHOUSE |
| Saythong Guest House is located in the very centre of Champasak Town, on the banks of the Mekong River with a restaurant providing spectacular 180 degree views. This family run guest house has a selection of clean and comfortable rooms with private, cold water bathrooms and is a convenient base for exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Temple; Wat Phou, as well as local village life in beautiful Champasak and nearby Dong Daeng Island.

With a wealth of activities, spectacular scenery and a perfect setting, not to mention quality accommodation in bungalows, a visit to Tadlo Lodge will be one to remember. |
TAENG GUESTHOUSE |
| You'll find this place by turning right when you reach Sailomyen Guesthouse. The rooms are just beds with mozzie nets and fans, but the bedding is great, and even through youre not right on the river, the rooms stay cool at night and have a great atmosphere. The shared facilities are pretty basic, with low water-pressure and a squat toilet. A good overflow option if the Sailomyen is full. |
TENAS BUNGALOWS |
| Tenas Bungalows and Restaurant Just south of Thon Don Family, this spot has identical thatch bungalows and a more spacious restaurant than Thon Don. All huts have share bathroom and the sunset is thrown in for free. A very sleepy location. |
THALUANG GUESTHOUSE |
| The Thoaluang Guesthouse On the corner near the Sabaidy 2, the Thaluang is in a good position to catch the overflow when Sabaidy 2 is full, which is most of the time. But it has no atmosphere, and the rooms we saw here weren’t very clean - a bit shabby, and a bit smelly. Still, the place fills up often - probably because people are too tired to trudge down the road and try their luck at the places closer to the river. Itll do for the night, but definitely seek out greener pastures when you wake up in the morning. |
THON DON FAMILY EASY LIVING |
| Ok, so the name may not roll off the tongue, but this very friendly and long-running place is certainly worth considering. Your Lao-educated, English-speaking, Khmer host, Somsai, is a chatty guy and a fine host, the shakes are succulent and the beers ice cold. The wooden huts are very solid and secure, but there seems to be a dearth of windows - perhaps they plan to cut them in later. Plan considerable hammock time if you stay here. A stunning sunset point. |
TIM GUESTHOUSE |
| Tim Guesthouse is supposed to be the place to be in Tad Lo, but we were underwhelmed. The rooms we saw were in a lodge across the street from reception - decent rooms, basic wooden bungalows with porches all around - but not a very scenic location, especially when there are similar options right along the river. Where Tims excels is in making foreign tourists feel at home, running a lot of services out of the reception area, which also serves drinks and a limited menu. |
TOURIST GUESTHOUSE |
| You can find the Tourist guest house by following the main road into town, past the elephant stand, until the road tees. Take a right, and then your first left - the road loops right into the grounds of an old wooden wat surrounded by a high concrete wall. There are some unhelpfully placed signs here and there - take a left, leaving the wat compound and passing through the monks quarters, tiny wooden huts up on stilts, not much smaller than the ones youre headed for. Across the rice field youll see a collection of houses. Make your way across and ask around about the rooms - it wont hurt to bring one of the guides with you to translate. Up and over the hill in back is a collection of four very basic wooden bungalows along the edge of a marsh with no electricity or running water, and bathrooms in outhouses to the side. The locals will set up a mattress and a mossy net on one of the wooden bed frames that all-but fill the interiors of the huts. Have fun! |
OUDOMSOMVANG HOTEL |
|
VANNAPHA HOTEL |
| This is really the only out of the way option worth seeking out if you want to get away from the crowds. Its in a good location to patronise the food stalls along the water where the fish farms are, and there are a bunch of down-home, Korean-style barbecues and other restaurants that cater primarily to locals. A good place to go if you want to speak Lao, eat Lao food, and never want to accidentally run into someone you went to college with. The accommodation is arranged around a courtyard - all with a clean private bathroom, wood floors and pink walls! Nothing great, but worth the price. |
VONG PASUED GUESTHOUSE |
| This very friendly, family-run spot has a bunch of cheap rooms in a longhouse. Rooms are very basic, though they all have private bathrooms - the cheapest ones have squat toilets and no hot water. The food here gets very good reports. You can eat in the restaurant by the road, or behind the accommodation on the riverbank. A recommended budget option. |
VAT PHOU CRUISE |
| The Vat Phou Cruise is a journey that starts and finishes in Pakse. Your cruise itinerary on the Mekong visits the majestic UNESCO World Heritage Vat Phou ruins at Champassak, the mysterious Oum Muong ruins at Huei Thamo, the 4,000 Islands with its myriad of waterways, and the Pha Pheng waterfall on the Laos-Cambodia border. |

BOAT LANDING GUESTHOUSE |
| The Boat Landing Guest House and Restaurant is the premier ecotourism lodge in Luang Namtha, Laos northwestern most province, with access to the Nam Ha Protected Area, |
HONG THA XAYSOMBOUN HOTEL |
| The Hong Tha is very different in style and size to any of the other guesthouses in the area. It comes across as an old-style hotel or country inn, and is very rundown. |
ADIAMA GUESTHOUSE |
| Adima Guesthouse is about 7km out of town towards the Chinese border. The journey can be covered by bicycle, but in the heat of the day it feels like an interminable distance. Alternatively, you can organise a tuk tuk at Viengsay Guesthouse for 5,000 kip per person. Its isolation means that its close to a number of small ethnic minority villages, which can be visited on day trips. |
BOUNTHAVONG GUESTHOUSE |
| Located quite near the bus station, Bounthavong has clean, basic rooms with wooden walls, a fan, mosquito net and clean bedding. The shared bathrooms with a squat toilet and hot shower are also clean. A small balcony at the front has street views, and a larger one out the back is covered with washing. They have some information displayed, including bus schedules, offer laundry at 15,000 kip per kilo and money exchange services. |
CHA RUEL SIN GUESTHOUSE |
| Staff are not very helpful at this very Chinese guesthouse -- in fact, dont even go inside because you might bother them or interrupt their game of Chinese chess. Situated above a restaurant on a crossroads facing the bus station, the rooms here are dirty. They have a fan and mosquito net, and a bathroom with a western toilet and cold shower. Large public balconies are empty, and have only walls to look out over. Despite signs in English promoting money exchange and a laundry service, there were no westerners in sight. Give this one a miss. |
CHAMPADAENG GUESTHOUSE |
| Hidden in a back corner of the morning market, Champadaengs rooms unfortunately do not look out over it. The rooms are smallish but clean, with a fan and mosquito net. Bathrooms are also pretty clean, with a squat toilet and cold shower. |
DAEN NEUA GUESTHOUSE |
| This large concrete structure houses a restaurant downstairs and atmosphere-free guesthouse above. The clean rooms come in two sizes, and all are very simple and fan-cooled, with a bathroom containing a western toilet and hot shower. A large shared balcony is out front, with plastic chairs and tables overlooking the main street. This is nothing fancy, but a great price for a clean room with hot shower. |
DARASAVATH GUESTHOUSE |
| Darasavath has cheaper rooms made of rattan with neither fan nor mosquito net, and grotty bathrooms with a cold shower and a squat toilet. Stained sheets on the beds and a lack of pillow and quilt covers dont add much to the atmosphere. The pricier selection are much cleaner and worth the extra dollar. Bathrooms have a hot shower and western toilet, a mosquito net and access to a small ground-level balcony which is blocked in, goes nowhere, and has no view, but lets air circulate into the fanless rooms. Staff are Chinese and speak neither English nor Lao. Avoid the cheaper rooms, but the others are fine. |
GOLD SOURCE GUESTHOUSE |
| Friendly staff speak good English at the hidden-away Gold Source Guesthouse, which has sweetly decorated rooms. Most have a shared bathroom, with squat toilet and cold shower, but heated water is available if you ask. Rooms themselves are clean, though smallish, with mosquito nets, but no fan unless you ask. One larger room has one big bed, interesting furniture and its own bathroom, again with cold shower and squat toilet. This is a good budget choice. |
GUESTHOUSE BAN PIENG NGAM |
| Ban Pieng Ngam is a community-operated guesthouse, in a Red Tai village outside of Luang Nam Tha. Accommodation is basic but clean, being dorm-style mattresses and mosquito nets on the floor of a large room. Squat toilets are outside, and youll need a sarong to wash in the river with the locals. The villagers are friendly, and the children are happy to play with visitors.
The cost covers three meals and lodging, and all profits go to a community development fund. To get there, catch a tuk tuk via the boat landing to Ban Nam Yen (about 8,000 kip). Walk 15-20 minutes through rice paddies and across the Nam Yen river. You can get instructions from the Boat Landing Guesthouse or the Tourism Office, which can also organise a guide and transport for an additional fee. This is a great way to get out into the local villages and experience how they live, without heavy trekking or going too far out of town. |
GUESTHOUSE THONG DAM |
| Hidden behind the bus station, Thong Dam is a small and very basic guesthouse. Rooms are small and dark with a fan, mosquito net and window. Shared squat toilets could do with a good scrub, but a separate hot shower is cleaner. A small balcony out the front overlooks the bus station. |
HOMESTAY |
| Come an enjoy a night with villagers of Ban Nalan living on the edge of the Nam Ha National Protected Area. Staying in the simple lodge by the edge of the Nam Ha River, the villagers of Ban Nalan will take care of your and treat you with the special hospitality of the mountain people of Luang Namtha. Luang Namtha is the premier ecotourism location in Laos. |
HONGTHA GUESTHOUSE |
| The Luang Namtha Hongtha Xaysomboun hotel Luang Namtha has a good reputation for facilitating very well trained employees. Being situated in this vibrant area has many advantages such as good access to nearby points of interest.
When visiting Luang Namtha in the northwest of Laos, stay at the Luang Namtha Hongtha Xaysomboun Hotel. This family run hotel is one of the oldest hotels in the town of Luang Namtha. The Luang Namtha Hongtha Xaysomboun Hotel is located on a quiet back street and has a lovely garden. |
HUA XIA GUESTHOUSE |
| The family running this small guesthouse, hidden away behind an equally small restaurant, seem surprised to have customers. They dont speak Lao or English so perhaps its just non-Chinese guests who leave them flummoxed. Rooms are plain, relatively clean and basic, most having bathrooms with a hot shower. One room has no bathroom, obliging guests to pass the family watching television to get to theirs. Not too bad, but for the price theres better in Luang Nam Tha. |
INTHANON GUESTHOUSE |
| This out-of-town guesthouse has no signage to guide you to it or even let you know when you are there. In a peaceful spot, surrounded by rice paddies, the guesthouse is a series of conjoined rattan-walled bungalows. They are basic and faded but clean, with a mosquito net but no fan. Bathrooms, which were added later, have a squat toilet and cold shower. At last visit they were building new bungalows that looked to be larger and a bit flasher. These will have a western toilet, hot water showers. The grounds are large and a small restaurant serves meals. |
KEOSHOUPHONE GUESTHOUSE |
| The newly-opened Keosouphone has quite clean rooms, some with bathrooms that have squat toilet and hot shower, and some without. All rooms have a fan and mosquito net, some have furniture. A couple of rooms have TVs, but no English-language channels. Downstairs is a restaurant with a standard selection of fried rice and noodle dishes at very reasonable prices. The walls have helpful signs in English advertising exchange services, bicycle rental at 10,000 kip per day, and the current bus schedule. Staff are Chinese and speak very little English or Lao. |
LUANG NAMTHA GUESTHOUSE |
| This family-run guesthouse has a range of rooms located on its large grounds, which include a huge pond. Rattan and wood bungalow-style rooms out the back fall into two categories. The cheapest are standard-sized, clean and decent, with bathrooms including a cold shower and squat toilet. Two other larger conjoined rooms have small balconies that lead onto the pond. Their bathrooms have a western toilet and supposedly hot showers but we couldnt get them to heat up. Inside the main building are large concreted rooms with bathrooms, hot showers and western toilets. |
MANYCHAN GUESTHOUSE |
| Due to its location in the centre of town and on the main street, Manychan is a popular choice. Rooms are basic but clean, with fan but no mosquito net, and the walls have an unfinished look to them. Bathrooms are shared and quite clean given they suffer so much traffic - they service the busy restaurant downstairs as well. They have a hot shower and squat toilet. Upstairs is a large seating area and a small balcony which overlooks the main road. |
MUANG SING GUESTHOUSE |
| Tucked behind an imposing wooden Tai Lue house is the more conventional-looking concrete Muang Sing. Rooms are small, but pretty clean and well looked after, with a fan and mosquito net. Some have bathrooms, with a bucket flush western toilet and a cold bucket wash shower. Each guest gets a large thermos of boiled water each day for a warm wash. Other rooms have no bathroom but access to shared squat toilets lit by candles at night and a cold bucket wash shower. |
OUDOMSINH GUESTHOUSE |
| Tucked away in a back street of Luang Nam Tha, the grounds of Oudomsinh are large, but unexcitingly paved with gravel. Two separate clusters of buildings are on offer. Creamy yellow huts have clean, pleasant rooms, with a fan, mosquito net and a window. The bathroom has a squat toilet and a cold shower. The real gem is a small balcony out back with a great view of a pond and some rice paddies. The concrete building has rooms at the same price, and with all the same features, with the exception of the highlight: it has no balcony. Go for the huts. |
PALANH GUESTHOUSE |
| Palanh has large, plain rooms that are nice and clean, most with an attached bathroom including a western toilet and hot water shower. One room has no bathroom, but access to two shared - one with a hot shower and one with cold. Rooms are decent and cleaner than many of their competitors, but this doesnt justify the slightly higher price tag. Plenty of tour information is posted in the reception area of the guesthouse. |
PENGTAVY GUESTHOUSE |
| A short way out along the Luang NamTha road, Pengtavy sits with its lovely carved wooden exterior, above Panda Restaurant. The area is quiet, and backs onto rice fields and water lilies. Be warned, however, that a number of construction sites are springing up in the area, so the quietness may not last for long.
Rooms are walled in wood and are very simple. Shared bathrooms have a squat toilet and hot shower and are reasonably clean. One room has its own bathroom, with western toilet and hot shower, but located next to the shared toilets its probably quite noisy. A small shared balcony out the front overlooks local construction sites, but the view is pleasant enough, and it is possible to get meals from the restaurant served up there. |
PHAYKHAM GUESTHOUSE |
| The foyer area of this guesthouse has been converted into a Lao-style disco. Barely separated from the other half of a large room, there are boards on the ground to designate a dance floor, and the walls are lined with booth-style heavy sofas. It looks like the perfect place for prosperous Lao men to sit and sip their Johnny Walker. It was hard to tell on our last visit if it actually gets regular usage. The rooms at Phaykham are pleasant and clean with a few pieces of furniture, fan and grubby bathroom with western toilet and hot shower. |
PHOU LU 1 HOTEL |
| The family run Phou Iu Hotel offers you comfortable rooms and a warm welcome to Muang Sing, Laos northestern most corner. Located close to the old French Market and behind the old French fort, the Phou Iu Hotel is conveniently located for your explorations of Muang Sing. |

|
SAMLANCHAI HOTEL |
| The Samlanchai Guest House in Vieng Phouka is one the Vieng Phoukas newest guest houses. It is not far the ruins of the ancient city. You can access Luang Namthas famous Nam Ha Protected Area from here. The staff at the Samlanchai Guest House will help you to arrange trekking. |
SAYNAMCHOOK HOTEL |
| The Saynamchook Guest House in Vieng Phoukha District of Luang Namtha Province is a good economy choice guest house. The staff of the Saynamchook Guest House can help you arrange your trekking trip into the Nam Ha Protected Area. The Nam Ha Protected Area is one of Laos most famous protected areas. |
SENGKHATIVAVONG GUESTHOUSE |
| Almost unrecognisable as a guesthouse, Sengkhativavong is above a CD shop. The rooms are small and basic, and with no fan to cool them, quite hot. The bed has cleanish, faded sheets and a mosquito net, but no bathroom. Light switches for each room are in one huge bank outside in the corridor, which is inconvenient to say the least. The shared bathrooms have a squat toilet and hot shower, while a small terrace has no furniture and a street view. Theres better around. |
SINGCHALEUN HOTEL |
| The Muangsing Singchaleun Hotel is a family run business in the heart of Muang Sing. The Muangsing Singchaleun Hotel is located next to the historic French Fort and not far from the old market of Muang Sing. When visiting Laos ecotourism destination of Luang Namtha a stop in Muang Sing is a must. |
SINGSAVANH GUESTHOUSE |
| This small guesthouse on the opposite end of town to the bus station is run by a lovely family. Rooms are basic - upstairs small wooden rooms house tiny beds with mosquito nets, with a shared downstairs bathroom. Downstairs rooms are concrete and quite clean, with one large bed and a shared bathroom with hot water. One room has a squat toilet attached but no shower. |
SINGXAY GUESTHOUSE |
| Singxay Guesthouse has basic rooms, and though theyre comparatively not too bad, its not a particularly welcoming place. Large numbers of people sitting around watch as you enter, but no one makes a move to welcome you. The relatively clean rooms have a mosquito net but no fan, and a grotty bathroom with a squat toilet and cold shower. Rooms are quite large and include a table and chair, but the walls need a paint and the airs musty. |
SOKXAYTHONE RESORT |
| The Sokxaythone Hotel in Luang Namtha is conveniently located the center of town. Luang Namtha is the ecotourism capital of Laos with its trekking, rafting and mountain biking. The Sokxaythone Hotel have a great balcony where you can relax and watch the idyllic rice paddies of the Luang Namtha Valley. |
STUPA MOUNTAIN LODGE |
| The Luang Namtha Stupa Mountain Lodge hotel Luang Namtha has a good reputation for facilitating very well trained employees. Being situated in this vibrant area has many advantages such as good access to nearby points of interest.
Overlooking the mountain valley of ancient principality of Muang Sing, the Stupa Mountain Lodge has not only the best views of the Muang Sing valley but certainly the best view of the sunset of any place around. As the daylight wanes sit in the Stupa Mountain Lodges verandah restaurant and sip the taste of Laos in a cold Lao beer. |
TAI LU GUESTHOUSE |
| The Tai Lu Guesthouse was the first guesthouse in Muang Sing and has one of the most attractive exteriors. As the name suggests, the building is Tai Lue style, ringed by a balcony and with wooden detail that has been painted in several different colours. Rooms along the front balcony are simple with no bathroom. At the back there is a concrete building with a number of newer rooms. These are very clean, with a fan, mosquito net and a bathroom with western toilet and cold shower. The guesthouse will boil water in a thermos for a warm wash. The ground floor houses a well-priced restaurant. |
TAI LUE GUESTHOUSE |
| Tai Lue Guesthouse Located above the best Chinese restaurant in Luang Nam Tha, Tai Lue is small and basic but very cheap. Wooden rooms are compact and bare, with just a bed and a mosquito net. There is no fan, and bathroom facilities are downstairs behind the restaurant kitchen. These are separated into squat toilet and a bucket wash cold shower. Try here only if youre on the very strictest of budgets. |
TAI NEUA GUESTHOUSE |
| Tai Neua Guesthouse is on the main street, just up from the market. To get to the rooms you have to parade between the entire family and the television, and up a filthy stairway. The fan-cooled rooms are grubby but at least the sheets are nice and freshly washed. The bathroom has a western toilet and a hot shower, which is surprising at such a cheap price. |
VIENGSAY GUESTHOUSE |
| Viengsay Guesthouse has been around since tourism first took off in Muang Sing. Many of the rooms once for guests are now filled with extended family members, and their washing covers the balcony railings. Three basic but reasonably clean rooms remain, each having a fan, mosquito net, and a bathroom with squat toilet and cold shower. Below the guesthouse is a restaurant, serving standard tourist food at good prices. |
VILLA GUESTHOUSE |
| The Luang Namtha Vira Guest House hotel Luang Namtha has a good reputation for facilitating very well trained employees. Being situated in this vibrant area has many advantages such as good access to nearby points of interest. SOUKSOMPHONE GUESTHOUSE |
| Souksomphone Guesthouse is a very well serviced and clean guest house. The staff are friendly and courteous and the manager, Mr Bousom can arrange guided tuk tuk (or motorbike) tours to the Ho Chi Minh trail. There are also good quality motorbikes for hire. |
ATTAPEU PALACE HOTEL |
| Attapeu Palace Hotel is the best available in this province, the hotel is clean and friendly front desk staff. The hotel is location in down town center where you are able to walk easily to central bus station, local market and tourist area such as museum. In the rustic province of Attapeu, the Attapeu Palace Hotel stands as a beacon of service and traditional Lao hospitality. The Attapeu Palace Hotel has the reputation of being the best hotel in Attapeu with it central location and comfortable quarters. |
DOK CHAMPA HOTEL |
| We found the cheapest rooms in town here, some of them quite spacious, with triples available for the same prices as doubles. The atmosphere is a little dank, but theres a nice living room area with good cable TV, and a porch area for hanging out. Its sometimes used by the prostitutes at the Vietnamese brothel next door to entertain their gentleman guests, but before youre put off from that, you should know that most of these trysts end up retiring to the Attapeu Palace. Of course, the walls there are thicker. |
DOK CHAMPA GUESTHOUSE |
| Dok Champa is located on the river front with a restaurant over looking the Mekong River and Don Deang Island. The restaurant provides a pleasant place to sit and enjoy the scenery. The four rooms are also connected by a communal terrace with furniture.
Rooms are comfortable and very clean with queen beds and private bathroom with cold water only.
The friendly English and French speaking staff can arrange bicycles for hire which is a perfect way of seeing Wat Phou temple located 8km away, as well as book tours, bus tickets and organise boast for a trip to Don Deang Island. |
PHOUTTHAVONG GUESTHOUSE |
| In a good location close to the river restaurants and not far from the centre of town, the Phoutthavong has a lobby thats essentially a parking garage, but otherwise has surprisingly nice rooms. All the rooms have hot-water bathrooms and TV, and the air-con rooms looked and smelled clean and fresh. They even have high ceilings and little breakfast nooks. Theres a noodle joint right across the street and its a short walk to the market by the bridge. Recommended. |
SAYSEKONG HOTEL |
| The Saysekong, built in 2004, is the only place in town with genuine river views. Its in a great location, convenient to the riverside restaurants, the market and the centre of town. Its an ambitious place, designed to give the Attapeu Palace a run for its money, but theres no sign thats its succeeded just yet. The big horse-shoe driveway gives its imposing edifice a bit of a vacant feel, but inside its all polished hard wood and wainscoting, with a sweeping staircase up to the second floor. The rooms themselves are a bit cramped, but nicely done-up, with air-con, TV, big fridges, good furnishings and hot-water baths standard. The rooms are nicer and cheaper than the Attapeu Palace, but if youre arranging tours and treks youll have to head there eventually anyway. |
THANH NGA GUESTHOUSE |
| This Vietnamese-owned and run outfit mostly serves as a de-facto travel centre for Vietnamese visiting the area. The rooms are a bit of an afterthought - decent if slightly shabby, with TVs and private baths. The second floor has a pretty nice balcony seating area, though on our visit it was being enjoyed more by drying laundry than guests (of which there were none). Still, the fan rooms are good and cheap, and its not a bad place to stay if youre catching a morning bus to Vietnam. The central location is a big plus and theres also a Vietnamese restaurant right near by. They exchange dollars and baht here, as well as Vietnamese dong. |

AOUNEKHAM GUESTHOUSE |
| We were hoping to find a hidden gem out here on the edge of town. The outside looks attractive, and it gives on to a pretty patch of woods - but unfortunately the rooms offer no views and felt cramped. All the toilets are squat style, but at least the showers are all hot-water. Really not worth the inconvenience of staying so far outside of town. |
DEUAN SAVANH SIPHANDONE |
| Just two doors down from the TandM is the Deuan Savanh - Siphandone Guesthouse consisting of a series of concrete single-storey blocks with garish turquoise exterior. Like the TandM, it is a typical Lao roadside guesthouse: clean, convenient and comfortable, but lacking in charm. A small bar and restaurant with a limited menu is attached, set back from the road beyond the car park and garden area. |
LAO HOUNG HOTEL |
| Every room is equipped with the home comforts you would expect from a hotel of this class. Facilities such as restaurant and laundry service are provided on-site at this great Vientiane hotel. Visitors to Vientiane will see that the hotel is the right choice with its convenient location and complete service and facilities. In the event of overbooking of the hotel Vital International Services will offer you an alternative hotel in the same category with the same conditions |
PAKSAN HOTEL |
| The Paksan Hotel is the best hotel in Paksan in Bolikhamxay Province. The Paksan Hotel is modern and comfortable and coveniently located near the government and business districts of Paksan. Paksan in a town on the Mekong River on the main highway to the south of Laos. |
PHONECHALEUN GUESTHOUSE |
| This place was completely empty on our visit, but we were able to dig up a staff member to show us the rooms. Theyre basic, but clean, with fans, some small furnishings, and private, cold-water bathrooms with squat toilets. Its worth a mention for you bargain hunters because the rooms are the cheapest in Lak Xao, if you dont happen to luck into one of the two fan doubles at the Phoutthavong. The rooms are in a motel-style long house, in the shadow of the looming limestone massif, Phou Pha Phi Hong. The staff speak little English and theres no restaurant on site, but its good value for the price. |
PHOUTTHAVONG GUESTHOUSE BORIKHAMXAI |
| In a good location close to the river restaurants and not far from the centre of town, the Phoutthavong has a lobby thats essentially a parking garage, but otherwise has surprisingly nice rooms. All the rooms have hot-water bathrooms and TV, and the air-con rooms looked and smelled clean and fresh. They even have high ceilings and little breakfast nooks. Theres a noodle joint right across the street and its a short walk to the market by the bridge. Recommended. |
SOULIYA GUESTHOUSE |
| Near the border crossing between Laos and Vietnam, the Souliya Hotel is in the hot springs resort town of Lak Sao. The Souliya Hotels comfortable pillows will cradle your head during your respite in Lak Sao, Khammouane Province.
The rooms are reliably clean, come with TVs standard, and even the air-con versions are easy on the nose. Some of the cheaper rooms have no windows, but at least theyre good and dark if youve been travelling hard and need to hit the hay while its still daylight. Another benefit of a windowless room - no mosquitoes. The rooms vary so ask to see several. |
SOUKI SUKI GUESTHOUSE |
| This place was mostly a vacant lot about to undergo a large construction project. There were also (literally) one hundred yellow cases of empty Beer Lao bottles stacked in front of the guest house. A testament to the popularity of the on-site restaurant as a late-night drinking spot and a cafeteria for tour groups. The rooms available at the moment are all in a building 100m away from the potential party noise, so it may not be too much of a problem, and they dont seem to rock the house there every night. The rooms are decent -- small and clean, with TVs and hot-water bathrooms with western-style toilets standard. The fan rooms are certainly not a bad deal. |
TAD LEUK WATERFALL CAMP SITE |
| Alongside the Tad Leuk waterfall is a friendly family-run camp site. With only a dozen or so visitors overnighting there every month, theres a good chance it will be deserted. There are no firm rules about where to pitch tents, though a grassy clearing is made available. Between October and April, consider setting up camp on the flat, rocky pavement adjacent to the waterfall. Tent, hammock and sleeping bag rental is available, and the staff will make up camp wherever desired. Toilet facilities are provided, but showering takes place in the river itself. Bring food - only very basic items are available at the site. |
THIPPHACHANH GUESTHOUSE |
| The Thipphachanh Hotel is located in the middle of Thakhek, in Khammouane Province, Laos. From the Thipphachanh Hotel you can walk to the main Market in Thakhek. The Thipphachanh Hotel is only two years old and has all of the amenities you will need, such as hot water, refrigerator and television. Our wonderful staff speaks English and we are certain you will have a comfortable and pleasant stay. The Thipphachanh Hotel in Thakhek, Khammouane Province, Laos is a great choice for and offers everything you would want in a hotel. |

INTHIRA THANHEK HOTEL |
| Inthira Thakhek used to be a major administrative and trading outpost under French occupation for which reason it is rich in splendid, though dilapidated, colonial buildings.Huge old trees give shade to broad avenues; the pace of life is languid and tropical. In the town of Tha Khek in Khammouane Province in Laos on the Mekong River in the old town square is the boutique hotel the Inthira Thakhek Hotel. Conveniently located for the exploration for this sleepy town on the Mekong River, the Inthira Thakhek Hotel is the best place to stay in Thakhek. |
KHAMMOUNE INTER GUESTHOUSE |
| This place gets a bad rap, and while its true the corridors are shabby and unkempt, the rooms arent so bad. Youll pay less for a fan room with private bath here than you will at the Travel Lodge. Some of the rooms struck us as a bit cramped, but weve stayed in a lot worse places than this. Some of the staff here speak English well. |
MEKONG KHAMMOUANE |
| If youre wearing a backpack and looking for a room, the tuk-tuk drivers will take you to the Thakaek Travel Lodge. If youve got a suitcase, theyll take you here. Its a bright-blue, four-story, arch-shaped building overlooking the Mekong river, and constitutes the best pick in town for comfort-travellers and those here on business. Elsewhere in southeast Asia this would be a two-star place - the atmosphere isnt exactly scintillating, but the rooms are clean and well-supplied with furnishings and amenities. All the bathrooms have hot water, most have tubs, and all the rooms but the fan rooms provide cable TV. The doubles increase in price according to size and views of the river - the only place in town that offers them. The top-of-the-line VIP rooms are huge, with two-bedrooms, two bathrooms, and somewhat cheesy decor. Still, an excellent deal for the money. Theres a good restaurant on site that offers Lao, Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. |
MI THUNA GUESTHOUSE |
| This brand, spanking new place was still under construction when we visited -only two rooms were available, but more are being added, and there may be as many as 20 rooms by the end of 2007. The expat owner and his Lao wife are clearly gambling on the rising popularity of the Konglor Cave tour to fill the rooms, and hoping to lure people away from the slim pickings elsewhere in town. It looks like they are off to a pretty good start. All the rooms are doubles -well furnished, though the decor isnt as nice as at the Seng Chan - most of it looks like it was ordered at Ikea. Still, they all have air-con, private, hot-water bathrooms with western-style toilets - TVs with UBC cable television are on the way. Internet should be up and running in February of 2007, free to guests. The prices right now are at a special introductory rate but expect them to rise in the future. Theres a restaurant on site. |
MOUTHONG GUESTHOUSE |
| This is a weird little place in a courtyard off the road, with some slightly shabby but nevertheless comfy rooms and no atmosphere, that serves mostly as a fall-back option. All the rooms have hot-water private baths, air-con and cable TV. It does have the virtue of being centrally-located, near some food stalls and restaurants. The staff are friendly enough, and English is spoken here. It has family rooms as well as the standard singles and doubles. This is just about the only place in Southern Laos that adds VAT to the bill! |
NHA NGHI GUESTHOUSE |
| This place is just a flop house for people waiting for a bus, but as a fallback option, its much better than the S.P. Guesthouse. Its in a better location and the rooms arent as grim. Dont expect much -- simple, shabby doubles with private squat toilets and insufficient interior lighting But the price is right, and its in a lively spot, with the buses coming and going in the morning and men playing petanque outside all day long. Here, as elsewhere in town, expect to be awakened at five in the morning by the public address speakers. |
PHA MAAN VIEW |
|
PHOUKHANA GUESTHOUSE |
| The Phoukhanna is a good alternative to the Travel Lodge in a more convenient location -- its just down the road from the new tourist information centre, and not to far from the river. Theres an attractive, open-air, roadside restaurant that serves decent western and Lao food, and is also popular with locals. The rooms are set in back of a huge, grassy courtyard, and are nicely done up with parquet flooring and good furnishings. The fan rooms are a particularly good value, but the air-con rooms are priced more reasonably. |
RIVERIA HOTEL |
| The Riveria Hotel in Tha Khek caters to the desires of business people and leisure travelers. The Riveria Hotel offers famous Lao hospitality and first-class service with a business center and high speed internet access in each of the rooms. The Riveria Hotel has 56 beautifully designed and furnished rooms, and also offers suites and VIP rooms with a sweeping view of the majestic Mekong River to the west, Tha Khek city to the North, and a mountain range to the east. |
SAINAMHAI RESORT |
| Sainamhai Resort is situated near Ban Namsanam, Hin Boun District, Khammouan Province, Lao PDR about 3.5km from Ban Na Hin which is located on Road 8, Km 41. The Resort nestles adjacent to a tranquil rural Lao village in well laid out gardens on the banks of the Namhai River, which afford our guests beautiful views over the river towards the mountains of Phouhai, Phoumone, Phousakheouk. The Resort consists of Lao-Style bungalows 8 two bed units and 4 big bed units with toilet and shower facilities suited and a Main Lodge with restaurant and a meeting room. The Main Lodge is ready to accommodate traditional Baci ceremony parties, weddings, conferences and meetings. For drinking Lao tea coffee at restaurant are free, any time of day, for all guests and visitors to the resort. The food is mainly Lao, although some western favorites can be provided on request. In the future we plan to develop the resort from its present 8 two bed unit bungalows to perhaps 30 two bed bungalow units, and expand our recreational activities accordingly to include river tubing, kayaking, canoeing, camping and renting motorcycles and mountain bicycles. |
SALA HILBON |
| The Sala Hinboun Hotel in Khammouane Province, Laos is built in the Lao traditional style and is made of local timber. The Sala HinbounHotel is meticulously decorated in a natural setting. The hotel sits on the banks of the Hinboun River and is perched on the surrounding stone cliffs, very close to the Kong Lor Cave, the single place in South East Asia where you can go beneath the mountain by boat. The Sala Hinboun Hotel is a great choice for your stay in Khammouane Province, Laos and offers everything you would want in a hotel. |
SALA KONGLOR |
| The Sala Kong Lor Eco-resort was recently opened and is located near the village of Ban Tiou, Laos, on the banks of the Hinboun River and is nestled amongst pleasant, lush green vegetation. Across the river from the Sala Kong Lor Eco-resort lies an underground creek called the Houay Say where some of Laos’ most clean and clear water comes from its mountain source. Approximately 1.5 km up stream is Ban Tiou’s famous Kong Lor Cave, where guests of the Sala Kong Lor Eco-resort can experience a ride in a traditional long tail boat in complete darkness. |
SISUPHAN GUESTHOUSE |
| The large wooden building you first see when on the grounds of the S.P. Guesthouse looks promising, but thats not where the rooms are - those rooms are rented by the month to locals. The guesthouse is an unattractive cement building in the back next to a stagnant creek. The rooms are cramped, unfurnished, and bleak. If the Seng Chan fills up, try all the other guesthouses before resorting to a room here. |
SOKSAY GUESTHOUSE |
| This place, 400m east of Na Hin proper along the main road, has nicely done-up rooms in a rustic wooden building. We got a nice vibe from the place, and the staff seemed really accommodating, though little English was spoken. Its certainly not as nice as the Seng Chan, but you can get cheaper rooms here and you wont be woken up by the public address speakers. They have one motorbike that they rent for US$10 a day. There is also a restaurant on premises. |
SOOKSOMBOON HOTEL |
| The Sooksomboon Hotel is a curious place, worth staying in just for yucks and giggles. Set in an old French-style building that used to be a police station, its notorious for its kitschy interior decor - check out the orange-striped, carpeted wainscoting in the halls! Some of the bathrooms were a little cruddy, but the rooms are spacious, with high, recessed ceilings, tile floors, and good cable TV is provided here. The cheaper rooms are in a separate building and arent as much fun. Technically, youll get better value for your money at the Mekong-Kham Mouane Hotel down the street, but this place gives you something to write home about. All the rooms have air-con, TV, and private, hot-water baths. |
SOUTHIDA GUESTHOUSE |
| This is a friendly, family run place - some of the staff here speak English well and can particularly helpful with tour information and scaring up motorbike rentals. The rooms are decent - spacious, with tile floors and Thai-style furnishings - but unfortunately they are a bit pricey for the standard - the ones on the upper floors are the best. The real draw here is the restaurant, offering good sukiyaki and Korean-style barbecue. |
THAKAEK GUESTHOUSE |
| Like a lot of places in Tha Khaek Guesthouse, this place doesnt exactly have a lively atmosphere, and the location and grounds are less than charming. But it does has some very good rooms, with carpeted floors, great bedding, good furnishings, air-con, TV, and hot-water bathrooms, some with tubs. Youll still get better value for your money at the Mekong-Kham Mouane Hotel along the river, but its not too bad of choice. |
THAKHAEK TRAVEL LODGE |
| The Thakaek Travel Lodge is flat out one of the best guesthouses in southeast Asia and features nightly campfires in the front courtyard that create a great atmosphere to relax with a beer and chat with fellow travellers. The main building offers a dorm room for a cheap, comfortable nights sleep - fan rooms, as well as rooms with private bath, are also available. The longhouse to one side of the main building houses wonderfully spacious rooms, decorated in a mix of French and Lao styles, with huge bathrooms and wide four-poster beds adorned with lacy-white mosquito netting. |
